APPLY FOR PORTUGUESE TAX NUMBER (NIF)
The Portuguese tax identification number, also known as “número de contribuinte” (NIF), allows individual citizens or companies to identify themselves near the Tax and Customs Authority in Portugal. The taxpayer number is unique to a company, and necessary to buy services, goods, or property, to do contracts, to issue a bank account, to go to school, to the doctor’s office, etc. All people in Portugal, citizens or non-citizens, residents or non-residents, will need a tax number if they want to settle roots, or just invest in the country.

The National Healthcare Number, also known as “número de utente” or NSNS, allows individual citizens to access the public healthcare system in Portugal (SNS), whether it involves going to the emergency room or to the local healthcare centre.
The National Healthcare Number allows you to have a family doctor at the local healthcare center, book an appointment, have medicine prescribed to you, go through medical and clinical exams and have them associated to your medical history, and much more.
