The Portuguese tax identification number, also known as “número de contribuinte” (NIF), allows individual citizens or companies to identify themselves near the Tax and Customs Authority in Portugal. The taxpayer number is unique to a company, and necessary to buy services, goods, or property, to do contracts, to issue a bank account, to go to school, to the doctor’s office, etc. All people in Portugal, citizens or non-citizens, residents or non-residents, will need a tax number if they want to settle roots, or just invest in the country
